Logo design winner Milly Bates

CREATIVE children have this week been praised for their superb entries in the Selby Hands of Hope logo design competition.Driving force behind the Selby Times-backed charity cause, fund-raiser Wendy Singh, had a tough task selecting the overall winner with the help of paper editor Chris Page.

Judges were unanimous in their final decision, which saw 12-year-old Selby High School student Milly Bates claim the honours.Wendy said: "All the entrants did a great job. "I feel Milly was a worthy winner, followed closely by runners-up Jenny Bell and Isabelle Le Monnier, of Barlby High All three received prizes from Bakkavor, parent company of Camblesforth-based English Village Salads and Yorkshire Fresh Fruit.

A thrilled Milly, of Chestnut Road in Cawood, said: "I decided on the final design as there's a swan which represents Selby, a river which is the Ouse, the thumb of a hand representing the swan's head and fingers fanning out behind representing the swan's feathers. "I was surprised but thrilled to be presented with a big box containing an easel, paint brushes, paint pallet, canvas and other art materials. I really enjoyed putting together my design."

The final design and printing of posters was kindly provided by Selby Chamber and Arc Sign
